Put on Those Walking Shoes !

Back in Buenos Aires it was time to put on our walking shoes on a beautiful day.

After the peace and quiet of Patagonia it was back to 8 lanes of traffic, speeding buses and miles of concrete and apartment buildings as we found our way back to Recolletta Cemetry in time for an hour long English tour !

Here we leant about the 200 year old history of Recolletta where status and most importantly money became a deciding point on whether or not you could secure a place of internment in this incredible Cemetry.

What makes the Cemetry stand out is the amazing pieces of architecture that make up the thousands  of massive mausoleums. In some cases the Artists name plate outshone that of those interned making some sort strange but very of creative statement!

From Presidents, to Dr's, to Nobel Prize winners to of course the much visited family crypt of Eva Peron, the 4,000 odd mausoleums offer an unbelievable and at times bizarre landscape.

Equally bizarre were some of the stories, Eva Perons embalmed body which was moved numerous times over 20 odd years & the incredible story of a girl called Ruffina who was interned at only 19 years of age !

Workers arriving the next morning after Ruffina's partial interment found that the coffin had moved. When the family arranged for the coffin to be opened they found scratch marks indicating that at the time of internment she was still alive !!!

We bizarrely took coffee at one of the many cafes bordering the Cemetery while enjoying a buskers Tango rendition (way too cultured for Kev !)

Another long walk and we made our way to the Japanese gardens for a few minutes of peace before this time taxiing our way back to our hotel well and truly done for the day!
